Servin’ up Silver!

by Chief NuggetHead

How cool is this! The NuggetHead won the Silver Award for this year’s 2010 Articulate Guru Awards!

Back in August I wrote a quick post on Why I Entered the 2010 Articulate Guru Awards. I had my sights set on nothing more than hopefully being considered as an honorable mention. To win Silver and be sharing the stage with the likes of e-Mersion, EndersDesign, Pinched Head, and Kineo is far beyond what I expected. I’m still pinching myself. Humbling to say the least.

I want to also say I can’t thank the Articulate team enough! They are more than a software company…they are a community! Every business who markets a product or service should take lessons from Articulate on how not only to build a community, but how to connect, share, support, manage, and encourage one! From Tom’s Rapid ELearning Blog, the Word of Mouth blog, forums, Screenr, Facebook, or Twitter they have created an online social culture other companies should aspire to achieve!

With the award also came a copy of the Articulate Studio ’09 to give to charity or organization. I chose to give it to the University of Memphis’ Masters Program in Instructional Design & Technology

One final note: I’ll be at DevLearn next month and have submitted the course to DemoFest. If you’re going and a want to see a peak under the hood, stop by the booth. I’d love to hear any suggestions or ideas to make it even better. At least stop by to punch or pinch me so that I know this really happened!

The Power of Community – A Spherical Encounter

by Chief NuggetHead

Growing up hearing the word, community I never gave it much thought other than it’s basic definition: the neighborhood I lived in, church community, etc. Times change and the word community in today’s blogosphere, twittersphere, and facebook-o-sphere take on a whole new meaning.

These spheres can be intimidating at first, but once you settle down in a community whether it’s your career, your hobby, or you’re out to change the world, you realize rather quickly it’s simply a group of like-minded folks just like yourself.

My community? I have a few but eLearning is my profession and my passion. I started blogging a couple years ago in an attempt to stick my toe in this community. Within no time I began meeting (in the sphere) many folks who share my same passion. By the time the next conference rolled around, it was as if we were already friends and colleagues…and we just met face-to-face for the first time. I refer to this as a Spherical Encounter!

About that same time I subscribed to the eLearning Learning feed…

A community collecting and organizing the best information on the web about eLearning

Of all the feeds I subscribe to I still make time to read as many of the daily articles as I can. I like reading what others are exploring, discovering, or just their thoughts on the same things I think about.

It’s official! This post is to announce that LearnNuggets is now part of the eLearning Learning feed! A quick inquiry to Tony Karrer and he graciously accepted.

If you’re reading this but not familiar with the eLearning Learning, check out my new badge in the sidebar and add some Power to your Community! While you’re at it it, go ahead and subscribe to the NuggetHead, too!

Why I entered the 2010 Articulate Guru Awards

by Chief NuggetHead

Entering the 2010 Articulate Guru Awards this year was not in my sights initially. Right after the announcement back in May, I was asked by several folks if I was entering. First thought was “no,” I’m too busy. Then just after our families summer vacation in July, I was encouraged again to re-consider.

With a passive sort of attitude I decided I would enter, but like many folks all of my work with Articulate is proprietary to to my workplace. So I had to come up with an independent idea, concept, theme, etc. If I was going to do this, not only did I want to present a subject that is neutral and one that just about anyone could relate to, but also to push myself to go BIG! read more…

Lesson II, Part I: Making your own Custom Articulate Player

by Chief NuggetHead

In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to build the graphics for the skin of your player. The ‘skin’ of the player is all the look & feel pieces and parts of the final player.  However, after deliberating with myself I asked, “Self, this should be two parts.” Due to the length of this post and without arguing with the smarter half of my brain any further, I concur.  Part I will cover building the skin’s interface, and Part II we’ll cover building all graphics for the buttons. read more…

What Tools Should We Learn?

by Kevin

The Big Question at the Learning Circuit’s Blog for June is “What Tools Should We Learn?”

In short – learn as many tools as you can! Sarcastic, yes but let’s explore that for a minute. My guess if you’re reading this you have at least one tool in your home that does only one thing. Like the tool that pulls a plug of dirt out of the ground to plant bulbs. Or a corkscrew that only has one job to pull the cork out of a wine bottle. If you think about it, our lives are scattered with multiple tools that do one thing. To get the job done right, it’s best to have all the right tools on hand, right? So why do we think one tool is going to be our one-all eLearning development tool? Building eLearning is more than just one tool…you need a toolbox! read more…
